This is the Paint This Desert Soft Introsoft launch for a site that will look at the big picture on public art in Las Vegas and the desert-at-large. When downtown Los Angeles began reinventing itself in 2006, I began blogging about its history, artists, and random communities. By 2011, it evolved into reporting and commenting about murals, street art and public art in the Los Angeles region at KCET, through my column, Writing on the Wall. That was also about the the time I migrated to Las Vegas. Soon after settling in, out of habit and curiosity, began seeking out regional public art to see what it told me about Southern Nevada. With this site, built in time for today’s announcement from CC/Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant program, I’ll soon begin sharing what I found, and look for more. During December, Paint This Desert will be a work in progress while I gather two years of notes and images. Posts will be scattered and brief. The light is good and the air cool, so it’s a good time to take photographs. Entering 2014, it will get busier here. Then when heat smothers the valley, you can expect longer posts to be dispatched from cooler conditions. |
