Land Art Links

"City," artist Michael Heizer's  land art in the Nevada desert. Tom Vinetz / Triple Aught Foundation / LACMA)
Carolina A. Miranda of the Los Angeles Times (though I always think of her first as @cmonstaha) does an overview of buzz on  #ProtectCity, the movement to aid land artist Michael Heizer "reshaping a patch of desert in Nevada's Garden Valley into a truly monumental work of land art." From her story:
Now a campaign called Protect Basin and Range aims to get the land around the piece some sort of environmental protection. Garden Valley, it turns out, isn't just home to Heizer's magnum opus. It also harbors desert ecologies and ancient rock art.

Some arts institutions are beginning to throw their weight behind this cause (which includes a Facebook petition in support of protecting the land). The L.A. County Museum of Art — which is home to Heizer's massive rock art piece "Levitated Mass" — has a post on the importance of Heizer's site on their Unframed blog. And the Gagosian Gallery, which represents Heizer, is also publicizing the effort. A #ProtectCity hashtag is circulating on Twitter.

As Hyperallergic points out, this isn't the first time there has been an attempt to protect land in the area. Last fall, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) tried to pass a bill that would restrict mining and energy exploration there, but the measure failed.

From January, 2015:  "Last week, a push to have “City” designated as a national monument began when Conservation Lands Foundation field organizer Laura Mistretta arrived in Las Vegas to begin a four-month campaign. The effort comes after Sen. Harry Reid’s Garden Valley Withdrawal Act (introduced last September) failed to pass. Designed as a way to protect “City” and more than 800,000 square miles of mostly federal land in the area from mining, it followed Reid’s suggestion four years ago to designate a national conservation area in Garden Valley."  LV Weekly

Call for Clark County Nevada Poet Laureate

3/21/2015

Get the word out. Clark County Nevada is looking for a Poet Laureate. A call for candidates to promote poetry “as an art form and a medium for inspirational public commentary”  was sent out today. The two-year position was approved by Clark County Commission in 2014 and the appointed poet will hold court for two-years beginning June 1, 2015. From the release:
Requirements: To be considered for the position, a poet must reside in Clark County, be at least 18 years of age and be available for public activities throughout the term of service.  A poet may be self-nominated or nominated by others.

Selection: Clark County Parks and Recreation (CCP&R) will facilitate the selection process.  A diverse selection committee of five county residents with expertise in poetry and literature will select the laureate. The laureate will be chosen by the criteria of: quality of work, distinguished achievement, perceived ability to advance poetry among the public, and an understanding of the public responsibility of the position.

Cynics will ask why the Las Vegas area would qualify itself to have a Poet Laureate.  They forget the city is a rich literary prompt.

Bus Bench Designer Announced

3/19/2015

OFF THE BENCH: After a national search,  Actual Size Artworks will design those public works funded bus benches that will double as public art for the Main Street Beautification Project. The Wisconsin based company is headed by Gail Simpson and Aristotle Georgiades. The announcement was made at the City of Las Vegas Arts Commission monthly meeting on Thursday.

USUAL FOLLOW-UP CHAT: Discussion from the board then became about pushback from some artists who wonder why projects with a budget go to outside companies or teams.  Dianne Cripe, Visual Arts Specialist for Cultural Affairs, shared the backstory on how the selection process that led to the decision, and added how overall 80 percent of art projects are awarded to Las Vegas artists. Commissioners recommended her notes be posted for artists to read.

OTHER FOLLOW-UP: Also coming out from the meeting were revealed plans for another workshop to help local artists learn how to work with civic departments and join the public art bureaucracy. That will be held sometime this summer. It's a follow-up to the same workshop held in January.
